Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Pascal Hitzler
May 5th, 2004

Collaborator of the Boole Centre for Research in Informatics, National University of Ireland, University College Cork, Ireland.

Programme Commitee member of the Slovakian Conferences in Applied Mathematics for undergraduate and graduate students, ISCAM 2003 and ISCAM2004, Bratislava, Slovak Republic, April 2003 and 2004.

Member of the Board of Editors of the bookseries Begabtenförderung im MINT-Bereich, Aegis-Verlag, Ulm.

Assistant of the Local Organizing Committee for the First Irish Conference on the Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science and Information Technology (MFCSIT2000), University College, Cork, 20th to 21st of July, 2000.

Since the year 2000, I have been reviewing papers for international journals and conferences. I have reviewed e.g. for the Journal of Applied Logic, the Journal of Logic and Computation, Computer Languages, Theory and Applications of Categories, IWFM99, SCI2001, CADE2002, MFCSIT2002, CSL2003, LICS'04, KI2004, and for the Austrian Fonds zur Förderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung.

I am a member of the following associations: European Association of Theoretical Computer Science; Gesellschaft für Logische Programmierung (German branch of the Association of Logic Programming), Deutsche Anwendervereinigung TeX e.V.

I did the design for the MFCSIT2000 advertisment poster, and created (with Renate Hitzler) the logo for the Irish Chapter of the Bulletin of the European Association of Theoretical Computer Science (Bulletin EATCS). I also created and am maintaining several web pages for different purposes.

Last time I checked (October 2002), I knew about 17 papers refering to my work, excluding self-citations and theses by students of myself or a coauthor. These papers were written by altogether 18 different authors.

Teaching Experience

At Tübingen University, I tutored the following classes, each for a semester: Informatik I (Computer Science I), Winter Semester 1995/96, Prof. Dr. R. Loos, including the programming language Scheme, Departement of Computer Science, approx. 12 hours per week. Einführung in die Topologie (Introduction to Topology), Summer Semester 1996, PD. Dr. Richard Bödi, Department of Mathematics, approx. 16 hours per week. Einführung in Prolog (Introduction to Prolog), Summer Semester 1997, Dr. T. Cornell, Department of Computational Linguistics, approx. 8 hours per week. I also gave a short introduction in denotational semantics of logic programs for this class.

During my stays at University College Cork, I tutored a number of first-year classes in Mathematics and Computer Science. Between January 1999 and May 2000, I was tutoring the MA1015 course "Discrete Mathematics" for first-year Computer Science students in Cork. As part of my position as research assistant in Dresden I am jointly responsible for the tutorials for the lecture "Logik" for first-year Computer Science students, with up to 800 participating students. I also acted as temporary substitute for some letcures at Tübingen University, University College Cork, and Dresden University. In the summer semester 2002, I gave a joint seminar (with Prof. Hölldobler) on "Logic and Connectionist Systems". In the winter semester 2003, I conducted a seminar on "Theoretical Aspects of Logic Programming and Non-monotonic Reasoning". In summer 2004, I'm offering a seminar (with S. Bader) on "Game Playing Computers and Artificial Intelligence". In winter 2004/2005, I'm offering a lecture with tutorials on "Operator-based semantics for logic programs". Since 2001, I am also active as supervisor of Bachelor- and Master theses in my specialization areas.

Since 1996, I am involved in running enhancement programmes for talented students of the age 17 to 19. I helped organizing and conducting annual international courses in mathematics and conducted for this purpose short introductory courses on metric spaces, generalized metric spaces, normed vector spaces, logic programming, and LaTeX. From 1999 to 2001, I was also involved in running an annual joint maths contest in Bratislava (Slovak Republic), Cork (Ireland) and Ulm (Germany) as a pilot project, which was initiated by Gudrun Kalmbach, MINT, University of Ulm. Between 1996 and 2001 I was an active member and treasurer of the Verein zur Förderung mathematisch begabter Jugendlicher e.V. Since 2001, I engage in supervising particularly able students in extracurricular projects.
